* DeliberatelyMonochrome: "Movie Star Max" features parodies of ''Frankenstein'' and ''Film/{{Psycho}}'' that are done in pseudo black-and-white, to mimic the old movies they're parodying.

* FauxHorrific: The ''Film/{{Psycho}}'' parody in "Movie Star Max" features AB attacking Max in the shower to... aggressively wash behind his ears.

* JerkassBall: Max is noticeably more rude in "Grab Bag Tag," constantly belittling FX over his magic abilities, because Max is jealous and wants magic for himself. Normally, he's nothing but grateful towards his best friend's abilities.

* RaceAgainstTheClock: In "Grab Bag Tag," Max and co. have only one hour to escape the land of Hocus Pocus before they're stuck there forever.

* ShoutOut: "Guess Who's Coming to Dinar" is a sendup of ''Theatre/TheDesertSong'' plus various ArabianNightsDays standards.

** "Movie Star Max" is one long cavalcade of references, with sequences sending up ''Frankenstein,'' ''Film/{{Psycho}},'' and the middle sequence being one long reference to basically every movie Creator/StevenSpielberg had directed at the time.

** FX has a [[TheEeyore much sadder, mopeyier personality]]; part of that is due to the pilot's plot being about him being homesick, but in general he's more worried. In particular, he has a CatchPhrase, "I don't know, I'm just an alien!" that didn't carry over. His main series personality is more of a CowardlyLion.

Added DiffLines:

* BrattyHalfPint: Zoe can be seen as this, but the main brat is her rival, Ben Letterman. Considering that he constantly bothers them and plays rotten tricks, neither Max or Zoe are very fond of him. According to Max, "Ben's an even bigger jerk than Zoe."

* OriginsEpisode: In "Straight Flush", A.B.'s body is stolen and while trying to retrieve it, Max thinks back to when he first met FX and gained his intelligence and ability to speak, then later built A.B.
