While promotional material ahead of time states that she takes on the last name Walker after her husband dies, Abby wouldn't be able to carry on the surname if she remarries. She'll find out she's pregnant some time in season one and give birth to a son, thus leading to their descendants on Walker.

The Walkers and Davidsons are related
Abby got pregnant from her one night stand with Tom Davidson, making the present-day Walkers and their rivals, the Davidsons, distant cousins.
- Jossed; it was never made clear if that union had consequences like that because the series gotcanceled after the finale aired. The only way we will know is if Walker ever addresses this when they air its fourth season.
