Tom Vincent from the 1902 version is the Old Timer from the 1908 version.

Unlike the protagonist of the more well-known version, Tom survives the story. The final sentence says ""Never travel alone!" he now lays out the precept of the North." This is exactly what the Old Timer tells the man in the later version, which he ignores, resulting in his death.
