Freaks are related to the Kurrshok somehow
They live underground and look quite similar. We know that Erin could turn humans into Freaks with the power of the Primal, but who's to say that the Kurrshok couldn't also turn into Freaks if exposed to the Primal? It's entirely possible that the Freaks below the Moira and in the caverns were originally Kurrshok, corrupted by the Primal somehow.
