    Susannah is Mona's mother
Or at least being controlled by her spirit. The old witch was unable to make contact with her soul, and says that it probably means she's not on the spirit plane. She even speculates that she could be attached to a physical form on Earth. A couple strips later, Mona's monster saves her life again and is officially confirmed to be protecting her. The connection seemed obvious to me, but I haven't seen anybody else speculate on it. Robert reasons that Susannah is only protecting Mona because she doesn't want to die, but also isn't killing her because she doesn't want to live forever. Logical enough, and most people seem to going with that, but that seems like a pretty cold and pragmatic reason, and Susannah clearly seems to be showing affection for Mona.
  • Another possibility is that Susannah is the monster that belonged to Mona's mother and, similar to Robert with his human, held some level of affection for the woman only to kill her for one reason or another and gaining immortality in the process. Thus it may very well be protecting Mona not only out of a sense of guilt for it's actions, perhaps seeking to atone for what it did, but to also preserve the last remaining trace of the human it had held so close to it's heart. It did manage to find Mona rather quickly when the monster invasion kicked off, far quicker than most monsters found their own humans, which suggests that perhaps it had been watching over her from the shadows for awhile and was essentially forced to take a more direct approach in protecting her given the situation.

Mona will have to rescue the final god
Mona needs to kill the Phagocyte, and Charon says that he can't be killed by humans or monsters. Mona is going to have to set him free from whatever Fate Worse than Death he is trapped in, so he can finish the job.
