Jess is genderfluid.
Now, this book was written in the 1990s, and set even further before that, so nobody even knew "genderfluid" existed. Sure, there was a bit of the concept kinda sorta existing, but not really. But look at Jess. At times, she feels truly like a woman, although butch. She's got feminine traits beneath her shell, but at other times, she truly feels like a man, and is much more masculine. She moves back and forth between these, on a spectrum, throughout the tale. Moving through the gender spectrum in various directions is genderfluid. Ergo, it makes sense to speculate that she's truly genderfluid and doesn't know it because it hasn't been discovered.
