WMG / Marvel: A Fresh Start

Go To

Ta-Nehisi Coates will write Captain America, starting in July, 2018.
Confirmed.
Nick Spencer will write Amazing Spider-Man, starting in June, 2018.
Confirmed.
David F. Walker will write Spider-Man (Miles Morales' series) starting in June, 2018.
Jossed; it's Saladin Ahmed.
Greg Pak will remain on Incredible Hulk and Bruce Banner will return to the series.
Jossed. It turns out Bruce is getting a different book: Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing. Incredible Hulk has been cancelled.
There will be a Fantastic Four revival at some point in 2018.
Confirmed! August, to be precise.
X-Men: Blue and X-Men: Gold will end at issue 30 in June 2018 and be replaced by new X-Men team books in July.
To that end, X-Men: Red will be renamed by doing away with the color and adding an adjective to the name.
  • What would this accomplish?
    • Well, it would look pretty dang silly if Gold and Blue were replaced with, say, Uncanny and Adjectiveless while Red still used the old naming convention. Plus, the most recent She-Hulk series did this, so there’s precedent.
  • Jossed for Blue - a TPB is solicited that goes up to issue 34.
  • Jossed for Gold as well, by CB Cebulski.
    • Though they don't last much longer - only up to issue 36. We just had the wrong month. New books in October!
The X-Men books will continue unaffected
Since that's what happened during Marvel Legacy.
Most of what's happening for A Fresh Start would have happened anyway, even without a relaunch.
Most series are keeping their writers. Brian Michael Bendis and Dan Slott would have made the moves to other series and companies they did anyway. Mark Waid's Avengers run would have ended anyway, and Jason Aaron following him was quite likely since he and Waid are Marvel's most high-profile remaining writers. Marvel Legacy was already building up to the returns/restorations of Thor Odinson, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and the Richards family. All A Fresh Start really amounts to is Donny Cates taking over Venom, along with Riri Williams and Amadeus Cho losing their solo books.
  • A lot of the "new" storylines starting in "Fresh Start" were set up by the Legacy starting one-shot too. It almost looks like after series reached the big milestone issues with the legacy numbering gimmick of Legacy (and whatever sales boost those brought) Marvel felt they needed to boost sales with new #1s again so... Fresh Start!
  • Even Ta-Nehisi Coates taking over Captain America was apparently planned long before A Fresh Start was (Bleeding Cool was predicting it as early as July of 2017). It's likely that Marvel originally planned to have his run directly follow Secret Empire, and Mark Waid's brief run was placed in between the two to give the Captain America part of the Marvel Universe a break from controversy.
The ancient evil Venom will be fighting is a Xenophage or some other Symbiote Predator
In a twist from the Poisons that by this point are completely dead Venom will instead be fighting a predator of his Symbiote that can do the same thing it does, that being bond with someone, but mainly so said host can be used as a meat shield hence the questioning of should Venom drop his morals to fight the monster.
  • Jossed. It seems whatever this monster is it can usurp control of a symbiote and is called god by other symbiotes.
Carol Danvers will go back to the Air Force
After the Life of Captain Marvel miniseries is done (it starts in July and ends in November) Carol will probably get a new ongoing with a new #1 in January. This series (which will probably be written by Margaret Stohl) will need a movie-friendly status quo. The Captain Marvel movie will have Carol working for the US Air Force, since that's what she did in her earliest appearances, so it will make sense for Carol to re-enlist at the beginning of her new book.
David F. Walker will write Spider-Man (Miles Morales' series) starting in the fall of 2018.
  • Jossed; it's Saladin Ahmed.
Kelly Thompson will write Spider-Man (Miles Morales' series) starting in September, 2018.
Jossed. She said she had four books coming up and we now know what they all are. West Coast Avengers, Jessica Jones, Mr and Mrs X, and Uncanny X-Men.
Bryan Hill will write Miles Morales' series.
  • Since he's doing an annual in August.
Jossed; it's Saladin Ahmed.
Kelly Thompson will write Jessica Jones starting in September, 2018.
Kelly Thompson says she is writing four upcoming series that will not be announced until summer. September solicitations will come out in June. It is possible that she was chosen to replace Brian Michael Bendis on Spider-Man and Jessica Jones.
  • We now know that one of those series is West Coast Avengers (2018). That leaves room for three more.
  • Confirmed. Although the series is digital-first, with the digital version starting in July.
Champions and Renew Your Vows will get cancelled in the summer.
Champions jossed, as issue 26 is confirmed and that will be in the November solicits released in August. RYV on the other hand, appears to have been replaced by a mini-series called Spider-Girls (so confirmed).
Nick Spencer is a fan of Gorilla Gorilla.
How else to explain this?
There will be a new SHIELD team book starring Miles Morales, Riri Williams, Toni Ho, Blade, and Leonardo Da Vinci
Since Brian Michael Bendis made an effort to set it up, it's only reasonable for Marvel to follow up on it.
After Extermination, the Blue and Gold X-Men teams will get major changes
Altered lineups and maybe new writers.
  • Both titles get cancelled.
X-Men Gold will be replaced by a Shadowcat and Colossus series.
Think about it: Storm and Nightcrawler are on X-Men Red (which is poised to become the main X-Men book if Gold is cancelled). Old Man Logan left the Gold team and his days in his solo book are numbered. Rachel is about to have a heel turn (which may tie into Extermination). That just leaves the newlyweds, whose adventures as a couple would be perfect to explore in a new series. Marc Guggenheim might even write it.
  • Sorta-jossed, but sorta-confirmed. Gambit and Rogue get married instead, and they get a continuation series. Gold does get cancelled.
Silk will be given another ongoing by Robbie Thompson.
The series rescued her from the scrappy heap and established Thompson as a legit comic writer. It only makes sense to bring her title back soon, especially since she has a movie in the works.
X-Men: Black will be written by Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler.
Technically confirmed, as the duo will be writing 10-page backups in each one-shot about Apocalypse.
Uncanny X-Men will be written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Mahmud Asrar.
Did you mean starting with issue 11? Because if not, it's Jossed.
  • Jossed, it's Matthew Rosenberg.
    • However, Hickman later took over starting with two minis, House of X and Powers of X. Looks like it's confirmed after all!
Nova will return.
And this time, given the theme of the relaunch, it'll be Richard Rider as the star.
Kelly Thompson will write Young Avengers Vol. 3
The plot will be about Putting the Band Back Together with Billy, Ted, Kate, Cassie and Tommy getting Eli out of retirement, while trying to find a way to revive Jonas, before going on to fight evil once again. It will be to the Young Avengers as to what Rainbow Rowell's semi-reboot of Runaways was. West Coast Avengers might dissolve to make room for this (or at least, Kate will leave that team).
  • I’m not gonna say “jossed” but Marvel actually can’t use anyone from the Bradley family due to a rights issue with the writer of Truth: Red, White, & Black. It’s why Eli hasn’t been seen in so long and Rayshaun Lucas is the new Patriot now. While I do think this book will happen, I think your specific prediction is wrong.
    • That problem appears to be resolved: Eli will show up in the Marvel Comics #1000 one-shot. However, this WMG is still jossed. Wiccan is in Strikeforce instead.
