Dr. Granville and Charlotte Dalrymple corresponded while she was in prison

In spite of the very moving scene in court when Dr. Granville helped Charlotte avoid sanatorium commitment and a hysterectomy, their interactions were more combative than cordial. In the month between the climax of the movie and the end, warmer affection blossomed through letters sent back and forth. Not being a spontaneous or overly romantic type, it took Dr. Granville nearly all that time before he made up his mind to propose marriage.
