The Forest is The Sick Land
The Musician's Parents deliberately antagonized the Musician in order to stop him from returning home because they knew they were becoming monsters or at the very least, they knew they were slipping away. This may explain their reluctance to give The Protagonist access to the violin which they know will bring their son home, thinking they've forgiven him.
