There is a sort of cynical, nihilistic and depressing approach to life in both. The "god" of Cat Soup was apathetic to what was going on in the world of the short film, there one moment to perform strange magic, eating the same world the next moment. It would be almost fitting if that god became more interested in a new world and began to take a sage-like role in it by being a teacher but the lessons he teaches end up being depressing, nihilistic and cynical.
