Kale and Cleo WERE actually following Cliff & Cydney but it was because they were trying to protect Nick & Gina.
Kale is in some sort of law enforcement (which is why he is so muscular) and got a bad feeling about the couple. This is why he insists that Cleo get out of the car. However, following his gut instinct, the two head in the direction that Cliff and Cydney were traveling. When they see that the two have now joined the company of Nick & Gina, Kale and Cleo decide to follow behind them to make sure nothing happens.
