Roter Morgen is a released content expansion submod for the Hearts of Iron IV mod The New Order Last Days Of Europe.

It adds an alternative path for Speer's Germany where Revolutionäre Zellen assassinate Speer and after the failure of Tresckow and the rest of the Gang of Four to stabilise the situation, a communist revolution led by Markus Wolf seizes control of Germany, turning the Nazi superpower into a growing communist powerhouse, completely changing the dynamics of the Cold War.

Roter Morgen released its demo on the 30th of December 2022, on the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the USSR, containing content up to and a little after the foundation of the Deutsche Volksrepublik. It is available to download on Steam here.

Sadly, as of the 4th of February 2023, due to most of the team quitting and other issues the submod has been discontinued. Several tries by other mod teams at forking off from or even completely restarting the project have since been made, but the most substantial attempt as of this writing seems to be the Revolution in Europe mod, which aims to be more of Spiritual Successor.

Roter Morgen contains examples of:

  • Allohistorical Allusion:
    • The Revolutionäre Zellen existed in real-life West Germany between 1973 and 1995. The real RZ was a decentralised group formed by ex-RAF members in the 70s, while in Roter Morgen, they are a far more significant force and centralised to Markus Wolf.
    • The Brandenburg Gate massacre has similarities to the events of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: Subverted, after Speer's assassination, Tresckow plans on bringing back Louis Ferdinand to Germany to crown him as Kaiser as a uniting figurehead, however, this plan falters after Oberländer and his conservative loyalists catch wind of it and violently oppose the idea.
  • The Coup: Oberländer and those loyal to him attempt to coup Tresckow's government after the reveal of his plans to restore the deposed German monarchy but are ultimately unsuccessful.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: The Revolutionäre Zellen movement starts off as disorganised militias that refuse to disarm at the end of the German civil war, however, if the Reich is incompetent at dealing with them, they can escalate to become such a great threat that they assassinate the new Führer and later on, topple the German state in a communist revolution.
  • Irony: For all of the Nazis ravings of the alleged Judeo Bolshevik infiltration of Weimar Germany, their failures can lead to Markus Wolf, a Jewish communist, taking control of the Nazi Germany they created.
  • La RĂ©sistance: Revolutionäre Zellen act as this to Speer's Germany, aspiring to bring it down to usher something far greater than Speer's false promises.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: After the communist revolution and the knowledge of the crimes of the Nazi party become well known to the average German, even the children of those Nazi party members are not excempt from vigilante punishment.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: In comparison to the broadly united Revolutionäre Zellen, Tresckow's "salvation junta" is split between monarchists, NSDAP conservatives, Speer loyalists, militarists and democrats, all of which tend to be at each others' throats.
