Winback is a third person shooter, the story is about a government team comprising of 10 people, Jean-Luc Cougar, the player character, Danniel Stewart, Lisa Roberts, Keith Birdy, Jake Hudson, Law Bruford, Mike Hawkins, Matthew Brown, Steven Law, and Thomas Smith, who infiltrate a government facility to reclaim a powerful laser-satillite hijacked by a terrorist group calling themselves the "Crying Lions", led by Kenneth Coleman.
* ActionGirl: 2 of the 3 women in the game. Lila, one of the Crying Lions, who is the first boss of the game and the only female terrorist, can do a good deal of damage to the player with her M-60 if they aren't careful. But she doesn't last long as Jean-Luc kills her, Lisa states that it takes more than "A crashing chopper and trigger happy terrorists to kill her." So it can be assumed she can handle herself. The third woman in the game is just an assistant to the Defense Secretary, so she's got no combat experience whatsoever.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Lisa is saved by Jean-Luc in the good ending, along with Keith, in the bad ending, she ends up being StuffedInTheFridge.
* BareYourMidriff: Lila, the only female Crying Lion wears an outfit that does this.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: Kenneth Coleman, the terrorist leader, in the bad ending, commits suicide after firing the satellite a thrid time, knowing he will be taken into custody by Jean-Luc and possibly sentenced to either life in prison or execution for his actions.
* BitterSweetEnding: The good ending is considered this, the SCAT have destroyed the satellite and killed most, if not all the terrorists. However, only 3 people, Jean-Luc, Lisa, and Keith survive the mission, everyone else in the team is dead.
* BlackDudeDiesFirst: Matthew, the only black man of the team, (And the entire game) is the first teammate to die. Being shot in the head by Ceicle.
* BloodlessCarnage: Somewhat subverted. There is no blood in the game at all, except when Tom dies and writes the security code in his blood on the floor. Other than that, no blood at all. Jean-Luc mentions a pool of blood near Law when he says that he is "Just resting" although there is no blood to be seen.
* BodyGuardBetrayal: Towards the end of the good ending path, Cecile will betray Kenneth and murder him. All so he can demand one hundred million dollars from the government.
* BottomlessMagazines: Jean-Luc's main handgun has unlimited ammo.
* DeadPanSnarker: Some of the SCAT have their moments, particurlarly Jean-Luc and Jake.
* DownerEnding: Definitley the bad ending of the game, although pretty much all of the terrorists are dead, so are all of the SCAT members, except Jean-Luc and Keith. Dan remains missing, AND the terrorists succeeded in using the satellite to destroy the Pentagon and the White House.
* FaceHeelTurn: Dan, the squad leader. He betrays his team, causes their helicopter to crash in the beginning, kills 2 of his own team members, and also betrays his own country. When he is defeated he reveals that he is from Sarcozia, and Kenneth is his brother. Although he states that his treason began after an encounter with the Sarcozian Rebels when he was a Navy SEAL. So he qualifies as EvilAllAlong.
* FinalBoss: In both endings, it's always Cecile.
* GunsAkimbo: Deathmask, during his bossfight, uses 2 handguns. And Banderas uses 2 Uzis.
* HeroicSacrifice: While all the slain SCAT members qualify for trying to stop the terrorists, Law has one unforgettable moment when he sends Jean-Luc down to the factory to hold off the mooks, while he succeeds in killing the mooks, he is further wounded by them and then finished off by Cecile.
* JerkAss: Cecile, he even states himself in the bad ending that nothing makes his day more than knowing he just completely ruined someone else's day.
* KarmicDeath: ALL of the Crying Lions can qualifiy for this trope, especially Cecile, since he killed 3 of your friends.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: After Jake is killed by Cecile, he tells Deathmask to "Teach our young friend here the value of making quick decisions."
* NonLethalKO: Lisa gets this twice, first from Cecile's bodyguard, Deathmask, then from Dan after he reaveals his treason to her.
* PlayerPunch: The deaths of your teammates for one, and the bad ending.
* RaceAgainstTheClock: The entire game must be played to beat the clock, in fact the ending is affected by how much time you took to beat the game.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Although they claim otherwise, the Crying Lions steal the satellite to use it as revenge against the United States for interfering in their civil war with the Sarcozian Government. Also, Jean-Luc after finding Steve's body, vows to "make the bastards pay." For the deaths of Matt, Tom and Steve, unfortunatley, more members of the team follow them before he does. Also in the bad ending he again vows revenge after finding Lisa and Jake's bodies.
* {{Sequelitis}}: The second game "Winback 2: Project Posiedon wasn't as successful as the first game.
* TapOnTheHead: Lisa gets knocked unconscious by Cecile's silent bodyguard Deathmask in order to shut her up when she is captured towards the end of the game after Jean-Luc reaches the control room. Jean-Luc can also strike an enemy from behind with his weapon's butt. (See NonLethalKO above.)
* TheUnfought: Kenneth, in both endings.
* UnusableEnemyEquipment: Many of the boss characters have weapons that Jean-Luc doesn't come across. For example, Lila, the only female terrorist, uses an M-60, then others such as Sergeant Thunder, uses a flamethrower, Duke, uses a gatling gun, and Banderas uses 2 Uzis.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: All the Crying Lions, especially Kenneth, think of themselves this way. Yet, they are like any other terrorists who are willing to sacrifice innocent lives for their own goals.
* YourTerroristsAreOurFreedomFighters: the Crying Lions are revealed in the intro by the Defense Secretary's advisor that they are the last remenants of a rebel group defeated in the Sarcozian Civil War.
