A lurking troper who's since de-lurked. My interests are English literature (especially medieval and Canadian), gay and lesbian history (I research this for a blog), and video games (especially Japanese of the RPG type).
I'm gay, and particularly interested in the portrayal of gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters in media. And since it's likely to come up a lot, I'll say it seems sometimes we haven't moved beyond Bury Your Gays and Depraved Homosexual - though now creators feel an extra explanation is necessary to justify it.
The overall picture is the same, however, and for me the question isn't "Is this trope justified in this instance?" but "Why can't straight creators (and some gay ones) see us doing anything but killing or dying?"
