• Word of God: According to this interview, Bill Griffith watched a 1963 screening of Freaks, a 1932 horror film about sideshow performer at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He was so amused by the pinheads in the opening scene of Freaks, asking the projectionist to slow down the film so that he could hear it better, enjoying the poetic, random dialogue.
