- Ability over Appearance: "Fancy" Smith was originally envisioned as a small, lithe man from the city. Needless to say, this vision did not survive contact with BRIAN BLESSED and his immense stage presence, charisma, and talent.
- Missing Episode: About forty percent of the approximately eight hundred total episodes from 1962-1978 are preserved. Of the 416 episodes made for Series 6 (1967-1971), only 108 survive: a few episodes each from 1967, 1969, and 1970, but there are no surviving episodes at all from either 1968 or 1971.
- Recast as a Regular:
- David Jackson, who had previously appeared in four separate guest roles, was cast in the regular role of DC Braithwaite from 1972-78.
- John Challis played Detective Constable Armitage in the "If I Can't Have Him" two-parter and the desk sergeant in "The Horse Dealer: Part 1", before going on to play Sergeant Culshaw from 1972-75.
- Star-Making Role: The series made BRIAN BLESSED a household name.
- Uncredited Role:
- Jack Haig as an extra in "A Place of Safety".
- Kenneth Waller as a pianist in "Haggar".
- Linda Regan as a factory girl in "Stop Over: Part 1".
- What Could Have Been: Michael Caine turned down the role of PC Bob Steele.
- You Look Familiar: The final episode "Pressure" featured original cast members Jeremy Kemp, BRIAN BLESSED, Joseph Brady, and Colin Welland returning, though not as their original characters.
