  • Creator Backlash: Ron Leibman, who played Vaughn Liceman, hated it so much that he had his name scrubbed from all credits of the film.
  • Old Shame: Ron Leibman had his name removed from the film. MAD had all the references to the magazine removed from TV and home video, and its staff still isn't particularly proud of the movie, even though Time Warner's ownership of the magazine means that the original version is currently being distributed again.
    • The magazine made a comic parody of this movie, calling it Throw Up The Academy, where they express their regret and shame, and make the comic cut short at only two pages because they feel this movie is so bad it doesn't even deserve a full parody.
    • One more Take That! appeared in a mini-satire of The Karate Kid Part III, seen in #293's "Mad's Video Reviews": Ralph Macchio's character (Who played Chooch) has "I Survived 'Up the Academy'" on the back of his uniform as he's being kicked in the gut.
    • Director Robert Downey Sr. would call it "one of the worst fucking things in history" in a later interview. He said that the studio denied every decision he tried to make and that by the end he gave up and just did what he was told, and that the experience still pains him to this day.
