Trivia / The Wicked Years

For the musical, see here. For the first part of the film adaptation, see here.

  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: Mildly, Maguire has said that he's very proud of Son of a Witch and somewhat disappointed that it's not more popular.
  • Sequel Gap: A ten year one between Wicked and Son of a Witch. This is why the theatrical musical doesn't include any references to Son of a Witch.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • When Maguire first conceived the idea of Wicked in the late 1980s, his focus was on the What Is Evil? theme, without the political themes of the finished work. But in 1990, when he saw how public outcry against Saddam Hussein was used to promote US military action in Iraq, he decided to incorporate the theme of how politicians use common enemies to unite the people under their power and further their own ends.
    • Elphaba was originally going to be more genuinely wicked, but as Maguire created her character, he came to love her so much that he had to make her more sympathetic.
  • Word of Gay: Maguire had stated that "something" was going on between Elphaba and Glinda, but he never specified what. And then one day, he did.
