• Inspiration for the Work: The story was inspired by an incident in Judith Kerr's childhood in Berlin during the lead-up to the Second World War when her father, a prominent critic of the Nazi party was at risk of prosecution before the family left Germany to become refugees before finally been settled safely in Britain. As an adult Kerr took her daughters to the zoo where the saw the tigers and the sense of menacing danger they presented clicked with kerr.
