  • As Himself: Gehrig's teammates Bill Dickey, Mark Koenig, Robert Meusel, and Babe Ruth played themselves, as did sportscaster Bill Stern.
  • Contractual Obligation Project: Gary Cooper was not much of a baseball fan, but agreed to do the film as he owed one to Samuel Goldwyn.
  • Dawson Casting: Gary Cooper was born in 1901, and Lou Gehrig in 1903, so when this movie was released Cooper was barely two years older than the real Gehrig would have been.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: Gary Cooper was decidedly not a fan of baseball and required extensive coaching in order to look even passable on a baseball diamond.
