- As Himself: Gehrig's teammates Bill Dickey, Mark Koenig, Robert Meusel, and Babe Ruth played themselves, as did sportscaster Bill Stern.
- Contractual Obligation Project: Gary Cooper was not much of a baseball fan, but agreed to do the film as he owed one to Samuel Goldwyn.
- Dawson Casting: Gary Cooper was born in 1901, and Lou Gehrig in 1903, so when this movie was released Cooper was barely two years older than the real Gehrig would have been.
- Irony as She Is Cast: Gary Cooper was decidedly not a fan of baseball and required extensive coaching in order to look even passable on a baseball diamond. In fact, he had never played the game before, even as a youth, and had never even seen a baseball game in person until he was hired for this film.
- What Could Have Been:
- Cary Grant and Spencer Tracy were among those considered to play Lou Gehrig.
- Mrs. Lou Gehrig's choices to play her in the film were initially either Jean Arthur or Barbara Stanwyck but after seeing Teresa Wright in the movie she was won over.
