- Acclaimed Flop: It has an approval rating of over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and most of the people who saw it praised it highly on social media, but to date it has taken in $62 million against a budget of $50 million, which means it lost money overall. It might eventually move into the lamplight if it becomes a Cult Classic.
- Awesome, Dear Boy: Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe accepted partly because they wanted to work with each other (Gosling even said that by reading the script while already imagining Crowe as Healy, "the movie just immediately became so funny").
- California Doubling: Set in Los Angeles, mostly filmed in Atlanta.

- Playing Against Type:
- Ryan Gosling, better known for playing dreamy, dramatic badasses, is in this movie a pathetic Non-Action Guy who cries at the first sign of trouble.
- Similarly, Matt Bomer usually plays handsome, charismatic leading men, and in this movie is a creepy and intense murderer.
- Voice-Only Cameo: Hannibal Buress is the voice of the bee that Holland sees when he falls asleep at the wheel.
