Besides that, the entire series hasn't been released officially on DVD (it was announced that the show would see a DVD release in 2013 thanks to Creator/ShoutFactory, but as of 2016, the set never materialized with no word on why). All is not lost, though -- most of the episodes are available via torrent downloading and on video websites like Website/YouTube and Dailymotion. ** Somewhat for Creator/JimCarrey as well. ''Film/AceVenturaPetDetective'' put him on the radar after ''Series/InLivingColor'', but just a few months later this established him as a legitimate star. It helps that while Ace Ventura seems to act incredibly cartoonishly for no reason, Ipkiss' equally silly behavior as The Mask is explained by the magical artifact turning him -- a lover of classic cartoons who tends to repress his emotions -- into a mischievous RealityWarper.

** An early screenplay from 1991 had different characters like Stanley's girlfriend, Kathleen Berman (inspired by his girlfriend Kathy in the comics), Detective Mitchell "Mitch" Gallagher, and Scully and Vito Vitelli, who later became Dorian and Niko, respectively.
*** FamilyUnfriendlyDeath / FamilyUnfriendlyViolence: The 1991 script by Mark Verheiden had these in abundance. Such moments include Scully massacring a wedding reception at Vitelli's estate, emerging drenched in blood, and groping Kathleen while wearing the mask.

Per TRS, removing Doing It For The Art misuse and ZCEs

* DoingItForTheArt: Carrey went to the extra trouble of practicing how to talk/act while wearing the Mask's enormous fake teeth to enhance the comedic effect. Production had initially assumed that these scenes would be filmed with no sound from the Mask and dubbed later.
** In general, the filmmakers ended saving a lot of money on special effects because of Carrey's talent for cartoonish gesticulation.

* ExecutiveMeddling: Very surprisingly inverted if one listens to the DVD commentaries/behind-the-scenes material. Chuck Russell -- director of ''Film/ANightmareOnElmStreet3DreamWarriors''-- stated that New Line was interested in developing ''The Mask'' along the lines of the comic books; this would have become, according to Russell, "the next Freddy Krueger." But, he noted, that draft after draft of the more comics-faithful adaptation did not work. So, he fought valiantly to make the film a comedy; the Cuban Pete sequence is one of the few elements that survived until the final cut.

** The workprint also makes Tina come across as much more cynical compared to the final cut, as added lines make it clear that she hates the fact she's been forced into recording the bank's security in the opening scene, but does so because IDidWhatIHadToDo (and tells Stanley this in Landfill Park). This would have made her later speech to Stanley at the jail have more dramatic weight behind it, and it would have been more obvious that she had a more romantic view of life by the ending.

* DoingItForTheArt: Carrey went to the extra trouble of practicing how to talk/act while wearing the Mask's enormous fake teeth, to enhance the comedic effect. Production had at first assumed that these scenes would be filmed with no sound from the Mask and dubbed later.

* ExecutiveMeddling: Very surprisingly inverted, at least if one listens to the DVD commentaries/behind the scenes material. Chuck Russell -- director of ''Film/ANightmareOnElmStreet3DreamWarriors''-- stated that New Line was interested in developing ''The Mask'' along the lines of the comic books; this would have become, according to Russell, "the next Freddy Krueger". But, he noted, that draft after draft of the more comics-faithful adaptation simply did not work. So, he fought valiantly to make the film as a comedy; the Cuban Pete sequence is one of the few elements that survived until the final cut.
