Trivia / The Green Knight

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: According to Word of God, Arthur was meant to come across as weak and pathetic, representing the end of his era of chivalry and knights. By his admission, Sean Harris ended up giving Arthur a lot more humanity and warmth than was initially intended for the character, giving him more depth beyond being just a pathetic old man.
  • Dueling Works: One that's specific to France, with the release of Kaamelott: Premier Volet (a comedic take on the Arthurian Legend) the same year.
  • Fake Brit:
    • The Swedish Alicia Vikander plays Essel, a Briton with a commoner's northern accent who likes to say "leeehhhhdeh." She also plays the Lady, who has a more posh English accent.
    • Australian Joel Edgerton as the Lord, a Briton of ambiguous humanity.
    • The Irish Barry Keoghan plays the Scavenger without doing much to hide his Irish accent, so it's unclear if the character is an Irish vagrant or a Briton who talks funny.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Sean Harris and Kate Dickie, Arthur and Guinevere respectively, previously worked together as doomed scientists in Ridley Scott's Prometheus.
  • Inspiration for the Work: The idea for adapting The Green Knight came to David Lowery while he was setting up a diorama of Willow action figures in his backyard. Lowery also said that another source of inspiration for the film was Excalibur.
  • Release Date Change: The film was scheduled to have its world premiere at the South by Southwest film festival on March 16, 2020, followed by a theatrical release on May 29. Then the COVID-19 Pandemic broke out, theaters were shut, the festival was cancelled, and the film was pulled from the schedule, then was rescheduled to July 30, 2021. The film's planned UK release on August 6, 2021 was pulled due to a surge in COVID cases the preceding July.
  • What Could Have Been: The version that would have premiered at SXSW 2020 would have been shorter than the final 2021 release. The film was re-edited significantly during the pandemic due to David Lowery being unsatisfied with the initial cut.
