• Acclaimed Flop: It opened the same weekend as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and didn't even crack $20 million total worldwide. Despite this, the film was given almost universal acclaim, with some critics calling it the best teen/coming of age film since John Hughes, and Hailee Steinfeld received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance.
• Career Resurrection: After Pitch Perfect 2 became a massive financial success and reaffirmed that she was a bankable star, Hailee Steinfeld received near-unanimous praise from critics for her performance in this film. Despite being (as mentioned above) an Acclaimed Flop, the film nevertheless restored her critical respectability.
• Dawson Casting: Hayden Szeto (Erwin) and Haley Lu Richardson were 31 and 20, respectively, at the time of the film's release, but they played high school juniors. Also, Blake Jenner (Darian) was 24 and playing a senior. Borderline case with Nadine (also a high school junior), who was played by the then 19-year-old Hailee Steinfeld.
