Trivia / The City We Became

• Stillborn Franchise: The Great Cities Trilogy nearly ended up becoming this following the release of the first book (see What Could Have Been).
• What Could Have Been: As she states in the Afterword to The World We Make, Jemisin originally planned Great Cities as a Trilogy. Unfortunately, the series kicked off in March 2020 just as the COVID-19 pandemic forced NYC and the United States into lockdown. Between the pandemic's effect on New York and American politics, Jemisin did not have the heart or drive to execute her original Trilogy plan (and briefly considered just abandoning it). The plots for the second and third books were ultimately abandoned and re-worked into a single novel, turning the Trilogy into a Duology.
