  • California Doubling: The scenes where Lydia is in the Philippines are shot in Thailand. Todd Field wanted to shoot in Manila but he wasn't able to due to strict COVID regulations.
  • Cast the Expert: Sophie Kauer, a cellist, plays Olga Metkina. Lydia's orchestra is also filled out by musicians rather than actors.
  • Corpsing: A very unusual example from Cate Blanchett during the "Apartment For Sale" song, where she blatantly laughs her ass off when she repeats the title. Given the song itself, who can blame her.
  • Fake American: Cate Blanchett, an Aussie (albeit with an American parent and so a dual citizen), plays native New Yorker Lydia Tár (also known as Linda Tarr).
  • Fake Russian: British-German cellist Sophie Kauer plays the Russian Olga Metkina.
  • Hey, It's That Sound!: The screams that Lydia hears while jogging through a forest in her dream are sourced from Heather in The Blair Witch Project.
  • Method Acting: Blanchett learned how to conduct, play the piano, and speak German for the role.
  • Playing Against Type: Mark Strong usually plays gangsters and villains and always makes them very intimidating and charismatic. Here, he's a lank-haired and bookish businessman who gets pummeled by a middle-aged woman.
  • Voice-Only Cameo: Alec Baldwin makes an appearance As Himself, interviewing Lydia on his podcast Here's The Thing.
