- Wag the Director: Shatner and Nimoy again, though this time for better reasons than ego. Roddenberry wanted to make the IDIC emblem so he could sell it as merchandise (a "premium", included as an in-show advertisement, rather than one of the numerous tie-ins — toys, books, records, posters, etc. — that had been available in stores for years), but the actors hated the idea. Eventually he toned it down, but Kirk still has a "pointless" speech about it.
- What Could Have Been: Jessica Walter was originally approached to play Dr. Miranda Jones, but was unavailable.
- You Look Familiar: Diana Muldaur previously played Dr. Ann Mulhall in "Return to Tomorrow". The producers were reluctant to bring back such a memorable guest star, but eventually, they relented. Muldaur wears a black wig in this episode to differentiate her from the previous character, who was kind of an ash blonde. She went on to play Dr. Katherine Pulaski in the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
