As cited under Does This Remind You of Anything?, the Federation and Romulan responses to the supernova crisis were intended to parallel climate change and Brexit. However, The Last Best Hope was released in early February 2020, i.e. the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic (and about a month before the first lockdowns). So for readers who read the novel during the quarantine, many aspects of the plot — in particular the Romulan government lying to its own populace about the crisis and silencing critics and scientists — ended up taking on on a completely different context.
