• Author's Saving Throw: A common criticism of many Star Trek episodes was that the crew tend to fly off to the next adventure without having to deal with the consequences of their actions. The episode "Marauders," from earlier in the season, often gets heat for this. Well, this is not that episode, and Archer and Trip are left incredibly shaken up once they find out the result of their decisions. (Trip's actor, Connor Trinneer, once mentioned in an interview that this was a concern he'd brought up while talking with the writers.)
• Creator's Favorite Episode: It may end with Trip being read the riot act, but in reality, the episode is actually one of Connor Trinneer's favorites. In fact, he implied in an interview that he may have inspired the episode, as he said he'd spoke with the writers about whether Trip faces enough consequences for his actions.
• Science Marches On: Trip says that they have only discovered 92 naturally occurring elements. As of 2020, there are 94 that have been discovered.
• You Look Familiar: Andreas Katsulas (Drennik) also had the recurring role of the Romulan Commander Tomalak on Star Trek: The Next Generation. This episode was among his last television appearances before his death in 2006.
