• Reality Subtext: While discussing having to carry the O'Briens' child to term, Kira says to Bashir "This is still your fault." In real life, the baby was Nana Visitor and Alexander Siddig's own.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Originally, Dax was supposed to be on the infiltration mission as well, as she's one of the few crew members intimately familiar with Klingon society. However, Terry Farrell got a rash from the makeup and so could not partake.
  • Originally, Gowron was indeed going to be the Founder as was set up at the end of Season Four. It was Ronald D. Moore who pitched the idea of making it Martok instead both as a twist and to avoid angering the TNG fans. Ironically, of course, Moore would go on to eventually kill Gowron in the final episodes of the series.
