• Irony as She Is Cast: Despite being a Musical Episode, David Bowie, who voices Lord Royal Highness as the episode's Special Guest, doesn't have a singing role. According to Casey Alexander, the reason for this was because Bowie was cast too late into production for the writers to pen any musical numbers for him, while Dani Michaeli claims it was due to budget constraints.
• So My Kids Can Watch: David Bowie stated that the main reason he accepted the role of Lord Royal Highness was because his daughter was a fan of SpongeBob.
• Uncredited Role: The hallucinatory live-action Spongebob that tells Patchy not to lose hope was played by a little person actor who was uncredited in the episode itself. In 2020, crew member Vince Waller revealed the actor to be the late David J. Steinberg, best known for his supporting role in Willow.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Originally, the world's oldest bubble would have been destroyed when Patrick ate it, instead of taking a picture of it.
  • The story was originally written as a standard 11 minute episode with only SpongeBob and Patrick making the trip, until the execs at Nickelodeon saw the marketing potential of "SpongeBob Goes To Atlantis", and had it retooled into a "movie" they could launch a line of spin-off merch around.
