• Science Marches On: A fairly large plot point in The Sixth Extinction centers around extremophile organisms, microbes that can survive in conditions such as acidic lakes, based on the apparent discovery of lifeforms that use arsenic instead of phosphorus in their DNA in California's Mono Lake (which is a primary setting for the story). Unfortunately, the study has since been discredited — the organisms do use phosphorus in their DNA, just in very small amounts.
