- Box Office Bomb: With a $2.5 million budget, it returned $1.75 million.
- Costume Backlash: John Frankenheimer admitted he didn't think much of Rock Hudson's wardrobe in the film, and wished he had a real costume designer on the crew.
- Deleted Scene: Frankenheimer shot a scene of Tony visiting Arthur's daughter and son-in-law (played by Frankenheimer's wife, Evans Evans, and Leonard Nimoy, respectively), but it was cut, which he always regretted. Unfortunately, the negative was lost; only a still picture (which can be seen in the Criterion edition) is available.
- Playing Against Type: Many fans at the time were shocked to see Rock Hudson star in a film like this.
- Production Posse: Richard Anderson (Seven Days in May) and Khigh Diegh (The Manchurian Candidate) had both appeared in previous films for Frankenheimer.
- What Could Have Been: Originally, Frankenheimer wanted Laurence Olivier to play both Hamilton and Wilson, but the studio didn't think Olivier was a big-enough name at the box office.
