* NamesTheSame: Jasmine the princess from Garth's tale, and Jasmine the lion. The former also shares the same name with [[{{WesternAnimation/Aladdin}} another certain princess]] [[Franchise/KingdomHearts who interacts with Osment's character]].

Moving to YMMV under Development Heaven
Deleted line(s) 2 (click to see context) :
* DoingItForTheArt: Creator/RobertDuvall and Creator/HaleyJoelOsment shot the scene where Hub gives Walter the "how to be a man" speech on a freezing night, with Duvall standing in a cold pond wearing just a nightshirt. Duvall insisted on staying where he was and giving a full performance for each take, even when shooting Osment's closeups and he wouldn't be on camera[[note]]even shooing away crew members who tried to give him warmer clothes and take him back to his trailer[[/note]]. Osment says that watching this taught him a lot about how to be a professional and shaped how he acted on set from then on.

* CastTheRunnerUp: Creator/TommyLeeJones was originally cast as Hub with Creator/RobertDuvall playing Garth, putting them together again with a built-in CastingGag, as both actors would have essentially played the inverse of their RedOniBlueOni roles in ''Literature/LonesomeDove''. Then he dropped out, and Duvall became Hub. Creator/MichaelCaine was eventually cast in the Garth role, but Administrivia/TropesAreNotBad because [[CoolOldGuy Michael Caine is awesome.]]
* FocusGroupEnding: The film originally ended with an elaborate funeral sequence where pretty much every character Hub and Garth encountered in the past came back to pay their respects. This was dropped in favor of the simpler ending shown in the final cut. WordOfGod says, however, that the original ending is still canonical.
