* DuelingWorks: {{Subverted|Trope}}, thanks to its cancellation.
** At one point it was scheduled for a 2016 release, putting it up against Sony's ''VideoGame/TheLastGuardian''. Both games involved human protagonists accompanied by giant monsters in fictional worlds, and were exclusive to opposing consoles.
** It was also set for competition with ''VideoGame/NierAutomata'', both being Creator/PlatinumGames titles that would release on opposing consoles (and on PC). Mercifully, ''[=NieR=]: Automata'' was announced for an Xbox One port.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: ''Scalebound'' was among many game ideas conceived when [=PlatinumGames=] was first starting out, with production of the game passed over in favor of creating ''VideoGame/{{Bayonetta}}'', though a pitch document was still created. This version of the title was a UsefulNotes/{{Wii}} game starring a young girl who commands a dinosaur companion. Between ''Bayonetta'' and ''VideoGame/TheWonderful101'', Kamiya returned to the concept and decided that the dinosaurs should be swapped out with dragons to make the game more of a fantasy title. In addition, feeling that just standing around and controlling the beast made gameplay too passive, the team swapped out the young female protagonist for an older male with his own combat abilities. Ironically, the original Wii concept would be recycled for a ''Bayonetta'' spin-off game (VideoGame/BayonettaOriginsCerezaAndTheLostDemon) over a decade later.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The amount of footage released prior to the game's cancellation makes one wonder what the final product would have been like. In particular, many at Platinum stated that the game would have had the biggest, most intense bosses in their company's history. [[VideoGame/{{Bayonetta}} Considering]] [[VideoGame/TheWonderful101 other]] [[VideoGame/{{Bayonetta2}} games]] they have made with huge bosses, this is saying something. But alas...

* PopCultureUrbanLegends: Rumors occasionally pop up from time-to-time about the project's revival, with one of the more noteworthy instances being in early 2019, when a journalist cryptically stated that Nintendo was reviving a [[https://nintendoeverything.com/rumor-nintendo-reviving-dead-and-buried-game-kingdom-hearts-switch-talk/ "dead and buried" game]] during a podcast, with other sources claiming that it was ''Scalebound''. [[https://wccftech.com/scalebound-producer-nintendo-switch/ One of the producers]] noted that this couldn't happen for a number of reasons but this particular rumor would still persist for a while afterwards. Years later, and the person who made the original "dead and buried" statement would confirm that they were actually referring to ''VideoGame/MetroidDread'', which had seen at least two separate cancellations before development started anew in the late 2010s.
