* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: While it's suggested in-game that the setting is 2014, the game has elements dating to its 2011 release:
** Reality television appears to be considerably popular in Steelport, with Shaundi being the star of her own dating show and the popularity of Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax, clearly mirroring the popularity of reality shows in the early 2010s. Series/JerseyShore is also referenced by several tanned clubgoer pedestrians, one of whom resembles The Situation and is even named Luigi in the files.
** There's also the popularity of the vampire series [=NyteBlayde=], a clear parody of the then-popular Series/Angel. The Latin female Boss will occasionally mutter to herself about forgetting to record it on [=DVR=], with no mention of online streaming services.
** Senator Monica Hughes appears to quite obviously be based on former Alaskan governor UsefulNotes/SarahPalin, who was still a relevant figure in pop culture around the time.
** The Creator/AdultSwim station contains ProductPlacement of their shows, most of which were still ongoing or recent.
*** While several of the shows the songs come from continued running for several years afterwards, whether still airing new episodes like WesternAnimation/TheVentureBrothers (which only ended in 2018) and WesternAnimation/Squidbillies (which is still making new episodes to this day), the station's host is Jon from Series/Delocated, a show that ended almost six months later. Many of the others also come from shows that had already or have since ended, including:
*** "Sports" from Series/TimAndEricAwesomeShowGreatJob, which ended in 2010.
*** A remix of the WesternAnimation/AquaTeenHungerForce theme, which the show itself had already stopped using when it started renaming itself with each new season until it ended in 2015.
*** Cheesburger's "Winner", a reference to the fact that they had composed for WesternAnimation/Superjail, which would end three years later.
*** Odd Future's "Anarchy", foreshadowing for Loiter Squad, which hadn't debuted yet and would end in 2013.
*** Dethklok's "The Cyborg Slayers", referencing WesternAnimation/Metalocalypse, which ended in 2012 (although the "real" band is still making music to this day).
*** DangerDOOM's "Basket Case", which was made in 2005 and features voice clips from WesternAnimation/HarveyBirdmanAttorneyAtLaw, which had stopped airing in 2007.
*** Conversely, the lack of mention of more recent successful shows or programming blocks, like the rebooted Creator/Toonami or especially WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty, sticks out like a sore thumb.

** Creator/DanielDaeKim, of course, reprises his role as Johnny Gat, if only briefly.
** Wrestling/HulkHogan as Angel De La Muerte.
** Sasha Grey (of Series/Entourage fame) as Viola.
** Creator/BurtReynolds... AdamWesting as himself.

* IronyAsSheIsCast: Phillipe Loren is insistent on the fact that he is Belgian, not French... so of course, they hired French actor Jacques Hennequet to voice him.

** Viola is pretty averse to showing her skin (and is particularly uncomfortable with wearing the Bloody Cannoness outfit) and, while her default outfit does show off some of her curves, is otherwise functional and conservative. Amusing, since Sasha Grey, like Tera Patrick before her in Saints Row 2, is a former adult film star.
