In the setting of 1961 (and even when it was filmed in 1991) the consensus among primatologists was that chimps can’t swim due to lacking the body fat necessary to maintain buoyancy. It wasn’t until around the turn of the 21st Century that chimps were observed swimming in the wild. While their bodies are not ideal for swimming, they can do it.
