* SerendipityWritesThePlot: Like the book, the first version of the script gave the apes a 20th century technology level, identical to our world except for the odd difference like apes brachiating along suspended bars to cross streets instead of using crosswalks. However the need to cast so many extras and put them all in ape makeup was too expensive, leading to the idea of making a more primitive world with architecture based on the Cappadocian caves.

* ScienceMarchesOn: The apes fit the stereotypes at the time: orangutans as leaders, gorillas as brutes, and chimpanzees as scientists. The first and last were inverted in the 2001 and 2011 reinventions given orangutans are solitary compared to the more social chimps - who were also given an uptick in aggressiveness, with gorillas, in turn, being more levelheaded (chimpanzees are prone to even attacking each other, while gorillas are usually calm unless disturbed).

** Orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas were though to be single species when the movie was made. Now there are three recognized orangutan species, two chimpanzees, and two gorillas, which makes the idea of they all coming together to make a single civilization even less plausible.

The apes fit the stereotypes at of the time: time, before the field work of Jane Goodall, Diane Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas flipped them on their head: orangutans as leaders, gorillas as violent brutes, and chimpanzees as friendly scientists.

* ApprovalOfGod: Pierre Boulle had thought his novel unfilmable and was surprised at how well the movie version worked. He even wrote a treatment for a sequel to the film ("Planet of the Men"), that while discarded for ''Film/BeneathThePlanetOfTheApes'' ended providing some inspiration for ''Film/ConquestOfThePlanetOfTheApes''.
