- Reality Subtext: After Mimile is murdered by having his chimney deliberately blocked, suffocating him with the fumes of his stove, Jouin and Cochefert discover that a number of other people who upset the Sabran family may have been killed the same way. In real life, Émile Zola, who strongly supported the innocence of Dreyfus, died from a blocked chimney in a similar way, and it has been theorised by many in France ever since that he was murdered by the right wing because of his involvement in the Affair.
