Trivia / O.J.: Made in America

Go To

  • Award Category Fraud: An extreme case in where the fraud was appearing in the wrong awards show. Despite being a television miniseries, it was nominated and eventually won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Film. It qualified because ESPN ordered a limited theatrical run in New York and Los Angeles of the series, and that in itself made it eligible to appear at the Oscars. While similar examples specific to the documentary category have happened before in nominations, Made in America's win caused the Academy to change their rules the following year to prohibit it from happening again. Because of this, the series will likely forever hold the unique distinction of being the only television series to win an Oscar.
  • Dueling Works: With FX's The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, released in February 2016. Downplayed in that while Made in America is a documentary, The People v. O.J. Simpson is a scripted docudrama.
  • In Memoriam: In his acceptance speech for the Academy Award win, Ezra Edelman openly invokes the name of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman to dedicate the win to them, as well as to other victims of police brutality in America.
