Trivia / New Adventures in Hi-Fi

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: By post-Out of Time standards, the album sold poorly, despite acclaim from both fans and critics.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode:
    • Michael Stipe described New Adventures as his favorite R.E.M. album for a long time, eventually tying it with Reveal in 2021.
    • Peter Buck regards the album's closing track, "Electrolite", as his personal favorite R.E.M. song, with Stipe similarly warming up to it as time went on.
  • Limited Special Collector's Ultimate Edition:
    • Like previous Warner-era albums, New Adventures saw a special-edition release concurrently with the standard edition. This time around, the release consisted of a hardcover book packaged in a slipcase, featuring full-color photos and artwork that directly contrasts the Deliberately Monochrome approach of the standard edition's liner notes.
    • The album was given a two-disc reissue in 2005 along with every other album in the band's Warner Bros. catalogue up to that point. Like those reissues, this one came with an expanded booklet and a DVD-A that featured the entire album done in a 5.1-channel surround sound mix (courtesy of acclaimed audio engineer Elliot Scheiner), a complete set of lyrics, and a documentary.
    • As part of the band's 25th anniversary reissue series, New Adventures in Hi-Fi was given the same Boxed Set treatment as its predecessors. The 2-CD version includes the album and a disc of associated rarities. The expanded release, more modest this time around, only adds in a Blu-ray containing a 5.1 version of the album, the associated music videos, an electronic press kit, and footage recorded for a promotional outdoor projection film.
  • Multi-Disc Work: Thanks to the album's sheer length, the LP release had to be split across two discs, finally fulfilling Peter Buck's longtime dream of an R.E.M. double-album. CD and cassette releases meanwhile are still on one disc/tape thanks to those formats' greater capacity.
  • Short Run in Peru: The album was released in Europe and Australia a day before it came out in the band's native United States.
