- Breakthrough Hit: The first notable film score for Jerry Goldsmith.
- Creator's Favorite Episode: Kirk Douglas later named this as his favourite among the films he made. Michael Douglas also named it as his favourite of his dad's films.
- Disabled Character, Disabled Actor: The one-armed man Jack fights with in the bar is played by Bill Raisch, who had lost an arm in World War II. Raisch would later go on to play a more famous one-armed man, on TV's The Fugitive.
- Screwed by the Network: Kirk Douglas wanted the film to open in art houses and build an audience, but Universal chose to market it as a Western and give it a wide release without any particular support.
- Working Title: Douglas intended to call the film The Last Cowboy but was overruled by the studio. Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo gave his final version of the screenplay the title The Last Hero.
