• Actor-Shared Background: Since this is a Guatemalan film, it’s no surprise that María Mercedes Coroy is Guatemalan, but she’s actually Guatemalan Maya, just like her character.
• Dueling Works: With The Curse of La Llorona. While Curse got much higher exposure through being a major Hollywood release (and turned a very strong profit with $123 million against a $9 million budget), the Guatemalan film was much better received with superlative reviews (including a Golden Globe nomination) and higher audience scores than Curse, which was criticized for reducing its titular figure to a generic horror monster.
