Go To

  • Breakthrough Hit: "Don't Close Your Eyes" was his first #1. His first really big hit came about 2-1/2 years earlier, with "Miami, My Amy," which reached the top 15 and still gets classic country airplay
  • Creator Couple: With Lorrie Morgan until his death.
  • Died During Production: He died of alcohol poisoning at age 34 while his label was still actively promoting I Wonder Do You Think of Me.
  • He Also Did: He also co-wrote Lee Greenwood and Suzy Bogguss's 1990 duet "Hopelessly Yours".
  • Short-Lived, Big Impact: Despite his short career, he's considered a legend of his time, and most of his songs have been covered by just about everyone. He was announced as an inductee of the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2022, nearly as long ago after his death (33 years) as it was years that he lived.
  • What Could Have Been: How different would the face of 1990s country have been had he stayed alive to record more?
