Trivia / Judas and the Black Messiah

  • Award Category Fraud: Despite Fred Hampton having roughly equal screentime and character development as Bill O'Neal, Daniel Kaluuya was consistently nominated for Best Supporting Actor at various awards ceremonies. The Oscars took this further by nominating both Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield for Supporting Actor. With both main characters being put into supporting, this led to several people questioning if neither one of them was the lead, who was?note  This ultimately turned out to not be a problem as Daniel Kaluuya won anyway.
  • Dawson Casting: Daniel Kaluuya was 31 while filming; his character Fred Hampton was 21 when he was assassinated. Similarly, Lakeith Stanfield and Dominique Fishback were 28 while playing the 20-year-old O'Neal (who is introduced at 17) and 19-year-old Deborah Johnson.
  • Dueling Works: Judas was released less than five months after The Trial of the Chicago 7, another film featuring leftist protests in late 1960s Chicago that features Fred Hampton as a prominent supporting character and features his murder by police as a plot point; the titular trial and Bobby Seale's plight are briefly mentioned in Judas. Both films were nominated for Best Picture.
  • Fake American: British actor Daniel Kaluuya plays American Fred Hampton.
  • Star-Making Role: While Daniel Kaluuya had starred in several high profile projects since his breakout role in Get Out, he was largely overshadowed by the film and stuck in I Am Not Spock territory. He was finally able to shed that with this film and became well known as "Daniel Kaluuya" rather than "the guy from Get Out".
  • What Could Have Been: In February of 2021, Noname revealed that she had declined an offer to be on the film's soundtrack, taking issue with the film making hardly any mention of Hampton's "radical communist politics".
