  • Creator Backlash: Author Richard Bach sued Paramount Pictures for the movie adaptation, claiming that it deviated from the book more than was allowed by his contract. Meanwhile, Neil Diamond sued the studio as well for cutting out large portions of his music.
  • Creator Killer: The failure of the film derailed Hall Bartlett’s career. It took five years for him to helm another feature, then another five before helming a Made-for-TV Movie that turned out to be his final film before his death in 1993.
  • Market-Based Title: The book's Spanish translation actually gave the title character a brand new name (renaming the book in the process), Juan Salvador Gaviota. In Brazil, something similar happened, with the character and book being renamed Fernão Capelo Gaivota (gaviota means "seagull" in Spanish and Portuguese) .
