  • Interest in the game skyrocketed when Markiplier announced that he would be making a film based on the game, which drastically caused a spike in sales.
  • Morbidly, the game would go through a second spike when the Titan submersible was reported missing, thanks to fans pointing out parallels between the poor build quality of the submersible and the ramshackle nature of the game's titular submarine.
• Life Imitates Art: In June of 2023, the shoddily built OceanGate submersible Titan imploded after a descent with wealthy tourists onboard who wanted to see the wreckage of RMS Titanic, resulting in a four-day manhunt after communication was lost. The extremely claustrophobic conditions, plus the allegedly poor control scheme for the sub (being piloted with a modified game controller with a model that looks unchanged for 11 years) have drawn many comparisons to the game, which David Szymanski has acknowledged.
