The ending was rewritten when the studio decided they wanted to give her a spin off to replace the soon to be cancelled Vanishing Son. The original intention is still foreshadowed in the final episode when Xena tells Hercules she has to let him know how she feels about him “In Case she dies fighting Darphus”
