  • Part of the reason Leon Schlesinger was able to sell the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series to Warner Bros. in the first place was by convincing Warners that the shorts would be a good way to cross-market their extensive catalog of records and sheet music, which is why they have musically derived titles. Subsequently the shorts were originally contractually obligated to include at least one full chorus of a Warner Bros.-published song. By 1935, the various directors had come to hate the obligation because even though they gladly used music when it played into the comedy, they didn't like the inflexibility it imposed. The gag in this short where the barbershop quartet stops singing but then returns to finish the song was Tex Avery's way of both using the obligation for comedy while also giving a Take That! to is as well. (The requirement was finally dropped in 1937.)
