  • Continuation: Euripides would write a quasi-sequel to the Oresteia called Iphigenia in Tauris, which picks up after Orestes's acquittal for killing Clytemnestra. As penance, Orestes is commanded by Apollo to travel to Tauris, steal the sacred statue of Artemis kept there, and bring it back to Athens. Orestes and his friend Pylades travel to Tauris to fulfill the mission, where they discover that Iphigenia, who Agamemnon apparently had to sacrifice to Artemis, was not in fact killed, but taken by Artemis to Tauris to serve as her priestess. Iphigenia accompanies Orestes and Pylades back to Athens with the status of Artemis, and resumes serving Artemis as a priestess.
